VT Engage

October 16, 2007
As you all know a big part of being an Ideas Member is participating in community service. This year we will be working with VT Engage, a program created for people to come out and donate their time to organizations in need of volunteers. The Kick Off event will be held on the Drillfield on October 16th. This event gives you the opportunity to visit booths of local organizations and clubs that are in need of service.

Big Event

March 31, 2007
The Big Event is Virginia Tech's largest community service project. It is one day where Virginia Tech students come together to say thanks to the surrounding communities in the New River Valley for being a gracious host to us for nine months out of the year and for their continuous support of the University. On this day, more than 2,000 students will complete over 250 service projects ranging from painting to yard work to trash pickup for residents of the surrounding communities. Through The Big Event Student Government Association aims to strengthen the relationship between Virginia Tech and the communities we impact throughout the year.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

September 30, 2007
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation does walks across America to raise money to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. This year a walk will take place on 9/30/2007 (Check in is at 12:30 PM so volunteers would probably be meeting a little earlier for setup.) The walk will begin at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Downtown Roanoke.

They are in need of volunteers to help with registration before the walk, people to hand out t-shirts after the walk, as well as people to count the money and deal with the financial aspects throughout the process.

"As many as 3 million Americans* have type 1 diabetes, a disease most often diagnosed in childhood that strikes suddenly, lasts a lifetime, and carries the constant threat of deadly complications, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation. JDRF's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Thanks to dramatic research progress, a cure is now within our reach. The Walk draws people together in a healthy activity for a worthy cause, raising money to help find a cure for diabetes. It's fun for families and builds camaraderie among company employees. Above all, it's an event you will feel good about being a part of."
